The Lincoln MKT Got Me Props From The Guy In The Parking Lot And Could Get You Some Nifty Things, Too

This is a compensated review from BlogHer and Lincoln.

I drive a five-year-old minivan and let’s face it — no one ever stops me to ask about my car. And even if they did, instead of telling them about my mpg or how it goes from zero to sixty in fifteen minutes, I’m more likely to show them the collection of petrified french fries and year-old juice boxes laying in the back seat. That’s when the person who had inquired about my car would say, “I only stopped you because you ran over my foot.”

But all that changed when I got a Lincoln MKT to test drive.

I got admiring stares from people at stop lights and a curious glance from a TV star who lives across the street. I even had a guy in the Starbucks parking lot ask me about the size of the engine, and while I didn’t know what the hell he was talking about I was able to impress him with the fact that my fancy car had a refrigerated compartment! Possibly for beer! He gave me a thumbs up, but I could tell it didn’t go over too well with his wife. Until I told her about the feature that parallel parks your car for you. Then her eyes went all dreamy and she fainted.

A little digression here to tell you a story. I’ve never had a desire to buy an SUV (note MKT is not an SUV) — I’m even sort of anti-SUV for their gas-guzzling properties But I’ve always said that one day, and my friends and family roll their eyes when I say this, I’m going to buy myself a huge, blinged-out Lincoln Navigator, probably the most SUV of all SUVs that should assault my sensibilities on every level but doesn’t. I can’t tell you exactly why, but something about it is appealing to me and I picture myself hauling down the street cheerily waving at strangers and frightening small animals.

That said, I had never had the same attraction to the Lincoln MKT; it didn’t seem like it would be practical for me, a mom with two kids, kids who hide food under the floor mats and always have friends who need rides.

So when BlogHer asked me to test-drive it for a week I wasn’t sure what to expect. But when it showed up in my driveway I have to say I almost put my Navigator dreams on hold (notice I said ‘almost.’) It has a powerful look and feel to it while not being overbearing, and their description of it as a ‘luxury crossover utility vehicle’ seems to be right-on; while it has many features that would make it a good fit for someone like me with a family, it’s got a much more sexy, luxurious feel to it. A baby stroller covered with rubies comes to mind. Maybe that’s the secret to the Lincoln brand — practical, yet sexy and powerful, something that would get someone like me to want a humongous Navigator. How do they do it? I’m thinking mind-altering lasers but I’m no scientist.

Here’s the rundown on what I liked and didn’t like. (Keep in mind that I’m not a car-person, so some of my terms may not be technically correct. For instance, I just recently learned that the ‘round controller thingy’ is actually called a steering wheel.)

Liked:

• Well lots, but first and foremost is the ride. Although to be fair I am driving a five-year-old minivan so perhaps I was just grateful not to feel like I was going to dislodge a kidney with every bump. But my husband was even impressed with the smooth, heavy ride (in the back seat as well) and he drives a luxury car that may or may not rhyme with ‘howdy.’

• Above-mentioned refrigerated compartment. I have nothing more to say about this other than, “Yippee.”

• I loved being able to start the engine with the push-button, keyless start -- the access key just needs to be somewhere in the car. (Also, the key can be programmed to limit the top speed of whoever is driving the car. Would come in handy when my oldest starts driving in three years -- wonder if that key can be programmed to taser creepy boyfriends.)

• The rear-view camera provides an amazingly clear, color view when the car is in reverse — I was surprised at what a wide area it covered, and how bright the picture was even on my street which is menacingly, horror-movie dark. My van alerts me with an audio tone, but I liked being able to see a clear view of what was behind me. A must for driving anywhere kids, bicycles, pets and zombies might be around.

• Active Park Assist. I have to admit I didn’t get to see all that this feature was capable of, but I like knowing it’s there. Great for someone like me who hates parallel parking unless there is half a city block in which to maneuver into.

• The MKT has a third row of seats, which is essential. Where else would I put my kids’ freeloading friends? On the roof? I also liked that these seats had easy access; the second-row seats folded forward effortlessly. I was in a car recently where it was so much trouble to get to the third row that we ended up just leaving the extra passengers behind. (Sorry, mom.)

Didn’t Like So Much:

• BLIS©(Blind Spot Information System) When changing lanes, these sensors alert you when another car is approaching on either side. I appreciate its function, but I found it distracting to look for the sensor light and didn’t like my attention being diverted from what was up ahead. Although, this may be one of those things that annoy you at first and then become indispensable once you get used to them, like underwire bras.

• The mount for the rear view mirror is huge. I’m sure there’s a reason for this, but I found it slightly obstructed my view and seemed unusually prominent. (Insert inappropriate joke here.)

• In the end, the thing I didn’t like most about the Lincoln MKT was that it wasn’t mine. I was sad to see it go (as were my husband and kids) and it was hard to get back into my minivan after all that pampered luxury. But those old french fries and juice boxes aren’t going to drive themselves around, so off I went.

And here are those nifty things I mentioned. I have a $500 Visa gift card to give away! Just answer the question, “What is your favorite technology feature in your car?” Leave your answer in the comments section before 11:59pm on Wednesday, February 24 and I'll use random.org to pick a winner.

my rear view camera...we (parents and our teenage boys and their friends) mostly just play with it (try putting a lego man on the bumper-super fun!) but it has saved us from running over our pets...and the neighbors (pets that is).

loved your fun review btw

My car is a 2001, so admittedly, not a lot of handy-dandy techie features to brag about. I'm actually considering buying a new car just for the iPod plug-in alone!
But my anti-lock brakes came in handy last week during SoCal's STORM 2010.

The rear-view camera thing is a must for my next car. I recently borrowed a friend's (much nicer, newer) car and it had this feature. It helped so much with the not running over trash cans, bikes, etc. and the picture was so clear!

I don't have any crazy special features on my car. However I do love the huge front window. My MIL has a car with a short front window and I felt like I couldn't see a thing. I felt claustrophobic/trapped. It gave me a headache.

The best special feature in my current jalopy is the steering wheel mounted audio controls for the radio, iPod and cd's ... I couldn't live without them now!! YEAH!!!!!!

gotta say the front grill looks like it was inspired by that "Slap Chopper" you see on late night TV ads right?
You're gonna love my nuts!

my car sends me messages, so thoughtful. reminds me to get gas, becausee I have exactly 10 miles till i run out...or to shut the passenger door--wouldn't want to lose anyone on that next turn. My microwave tells me to enjoy my meal, the car isn't that civilized...but it's a start.

I must admit that the Navisystem on my current car is probably the best techi item. My wife never has to tell to ask for direction. Not that I really had to in the past. I do resent the fact that woman is telling me where to go. "TURN RIGHT IN 1/4 MI" I go straight to spite her....

Since I drive a really old car, I had to install an iPod link myself, so that would be a best feature at the moment.

Really, the only technology in my truck is the after market stereo I put in. I'd say that my favorite technology in almost any vehicle is the stereo!!

I love the heat feature in my seats. Lately we've been experiencing a colder than normal winter, and the heated seat has saved my butt (literally) each morning when the temps were hovering in the 'teens. After scraping snow/ice off my windows, it's the quickest way to stop shivering for the drive to work. :-D

Well, there's nothing too fancy in my Honda CR-V but I use the rear view mom-mirror thing all the time and I like that I have to lighter outlets plug-in things (they're not called that anymore, are they - lighters?) and an aux jack to plug in my iPod.

Cecilia said...

I love the built in bluetooth and the GPS in my car.

I have a back up sensor on my car (not quite as fancy as the back up camera!) and it really makes me feel more secure about backing up in a tight spot.

My favorite technology feature would be ... the volume and radio station control feature on the steering wheel. Who cares about how many miles I have left in my tank. Sure the kids might have to push us to a gas station, but at least I can turn up the volume easily when they start whining. KIDDING. I love a well placed cigarette lighter outside of an ashtray holder and wish it came with a phone holder. Oops that is a wish not a fav feature. ;-)

My cupholders are my favorite "tech" thing. Hey, this is a 13 year old minivan and we found new cupholders in the middle seats about 3 years ago. Never ceases to surprise me although I could do without those surprises such as when the steering wheel refused to respond - ah, good times.

So, in my car(a Toyota 4Runner), there aren't a ton of bells and whistles, just your basic mid-size SUV, but I love that it tells me when my tires are low! Weird pick, but nice all the same. In a future car, I want it to be self-cleaning, inside and out. If ANY manufacturer ever makes this feature, I will be the fuy the
first to buy that car.

We have a 2010 Subaru Outback we were kind of arm-twisted into buying last month (having the engine blow out on your 5-yr-old, in really pretty good shape otherwise "it'll cost ya 6600 bucks for a new engine" car - also an Outback - I *know*, right? - kind of twists your arm pretty good...)

Ahem. Anyway, as I was saying... it has lots of cool features. Love the iPod connector. Love the Bluetooth hands-free phone function for hubs who is on the phone about ALL the time in the car. Love that the 6-CD player "remembers" that I had that song on repeat last time I was in the car. Love that the front passenger seat has electronic adjustment controls.

Yes. They get you with all those itty but oh-so-cool things... And? Would *totally* love to win :-)

My favorite feature about my 2003 Pontiac Montana is the fact it's "loaded" and I, actually, enjoyed THE LAST MINI VAN I WILL EVER OWN!!! ;) My favorite feature is a tie between the leather seats and the DVD player. Oh, and I love the third row of seats, to, you know, keep each child out of arm's reach from the other children. An automatic sliding door is pretty great, too, until someone gets CUTE and puts their arm in the way. Actually, the park aid has been a blessing, come to think of it - I've yet to run over one zombie because of that!

Enough said (maybe TOO much, I'm sure). But, who knows what 'round controller thingy I'll be behind next??? After reading YOUR review, I'm pulling for the Lincoln MKT! ;)

I live in a cold climate and my alltime favorite feature of my car is the Ignition Starter feature. As anyone who lives in states where the temperature can go down to 40 degrees or less, nothing is worse than getting into a cold car. You have to sit in the car, wait for it to warm up before you can turn on the heater. Also, if you are in a hurry to get to work or an appointment, time is of the essence so the faster you can get your car moving, the more efficient you can be with your time management. This is where the Ignition Starter button for the car is a great feature that someone can add to their package when buying a new car. How exactly does this feature work you ask? Very simply face your car and push the button on a special device that is small enough to fit on your key chain, and presto!. Your car has started instantly. Also,no need to worry about car theft because the care remains locked until you go and use your keys to unlock the car. The other good news about this feature is that I could be standing almost 50 feet away from my car and automatically turn it on. What a nice idea to have my car warming up as Im walking towards it after shoping or just leaving the office. In my estimate, the Ignition Starter is a feature on my car that I just cant live without. I consider it one of the best inventions the car industry ever made available to the consumer.

I have a low end car no tech features. Unless you consider a CD player, anti lock brakes, rear window defrost a tech feature.

Happy with my car just the way it is

My car is 13 years old, but it has a decent stereo system with a CD player that I truly enjoy. But the best features are that it's paid for, it still starts when I turn the key, and I can trust it to get me where I need to go.

I wish my current car had more technological features. I guess cruise control is the one I use most.

My favorite feature is my key fob for the doors, windows and trunk. So simple, but my last car didn't have one and it makes it much easier to get in and out of the car when I'm out with my kids!

I love how easy my car is to drive in the winter, thanks to the antilock brakes and seat heaters!

Sadly I have no tech in my minivan! But, in my next car, I want built in GPS and built in DVD players!

My favorite feature is my vehicle’s DSC (dynamic stability control). This system is a truly amazing safety feature that is becoming more and more common, and that I believe should be standard on all vehicles. It can modulate the brakes in a way that the driver cannot to keep the car on its intended path. I know several friends who’ve been involved in accidents that may not have happened had they had DSC.

My favorite feature is being able to remotely lock/unlock my doors!
